State Superintendent Richard Woods named Belair Elementary School in Augusta a 2026 Georgia Military Flagship School. A ceremony on Wednesday will honor the achievement.
The award goes to schools that welcome military families. Winners must show they offer helpful programs, make accommodations, and provide extra resources. Schools apply each year, and the Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission reviews applications before selecting winners.
"I am deeply honored to receive this recognition on behalf of our entire school community. Supporting our military-connected students and families is not just a responsibility; it is a privilege," said Principal Shetina Roulhac, per WRDW. "We are committed to ensuring that every child who walks through our doors feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed."
The Augusta school runs a peer "Buddy" system that helps military kids and their families adjust. Students can also get counseling designed for their specific needs.
Teachers and staff connect with military family life counselors. They partner with groups from the post, so kids stay involved. This gives students chances to join academic programs.
Belair serves families at nearby bases, and this honor shows how much the staff does for them. State officials created the award to find schools that do exceptional work with military children.
Georgia education leaders wanted to spotlight institutions making real changes for service members' families. The designation means a lot for this elementary school and everyone who works there.
