Subcontractors can now submit bids on a second Lidl supermarket planned for the Augusta area. The site sits at 4285 Washington Road in Columbia County. Doyle Construction, a Rockville, Md., contractor, wants bids.

Plans show a 31,000-square-foot store. Around 120 parking spaces will fill the lot. The property sprawls across 3.11 acres, valued at more than $2.25 million.

This location sits across from a Publix supermarket in Evans. It'll squeeze between Ray Ray's Car Wash and Waffle House. The VCA Columbia Animal Hospital once occupied this spot.

The German-based discount grocer runs 19 locations in Georgia. The first Augusta-area Lidl at 1096 Alexander Dr. opened back in 2017 and remains the only Georgia location outside metro Atlanta.

Lidl keeps things simple. The no-frills shopping environment lets customers pay less. This discount chain built its business on trimming costs wherever possible.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners voted in 2021 to approve building variances that would allow construction. County records submitted at that time showed the 31,000-square-foot footprint and parking layout.

Rountree Way will run behind the supermarket. Officials renamed the road in 2016 after it became a dead-end, half-mile stretch of what used to be one end of Old Evans Road.

The road was cut short during the River Watch Parkway expansion, which created the need for the new street name and configuration. The project marks the chain's continued expansion in the Southeast.
