Richmond County School System revealed that three magnet schools received National Merit School of Distinction Awards from Magnet Schools of America. A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School, C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School, and John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School all claimed the prize.
This award marks the second-highest honor Magnet Schools of America gives out. All three schools have now collected multiple merit awards over the years.
C.T. Walker Traditional Magnet School has snagged eight awards. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School tops the list with 13. A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School has three under its belt.
"These awards are a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaborative efforts of our students and staff," said Dr. David Hall, assistant superintendent of high school administrative services, per WRDW. "We are deeply proud of C.T. Walker, Davidson, and A.R. Johnson for their outstanding achievements and for representing Richmond County and the state of Georgia with excellence."
Schools must submit a detailed application to qualify for a merit award. Magnet Schools of America members submit these, and a panel of educators reviews them. Officials examine how schools boost test scores, encourage student diversity, integrate subjects, and build strong ties with families and the community.
The district assigns each school a specific focus. C.T. Walker Magnet zeroes in on communications. Davidson Magnet trains students in the fine arts. A.R. Johnson Magnet concentrates on health sciences and engineering.
The three schools will collect their awards at a ceremony during Magnet Schools of America's National Conference. San Diego, California, hosts the event from April 14-17, 2026.
