Cotton farmers donated over 1,400 pairs of socks on Thursday to the CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority. The socks will help those without homes stay warm as winter arrives. Growers from Jefferson County, Burke County, and surrounding areas contributed.

Socks rank among the most-needed items at shelters. Officials say requests for them come in constantly. This donation serves two purposes: it aids people who need help while supporting local agriculture.

"So in a way this is our farmers giving away a portion of their harvest back it reminds all of us how linked together we are farmers like Jeremy and his neighbors down in Jefferson County, farmers in Burke County and all over this region, they might not live in Augusta but the effects of what happens in Augusta ripples out to their communities," said Taylor Sills, executive director of the Georgia Cotton Commission, per WRDW.

The CSRA Economic Opportunity Authority works throughout the Augusta area. They received the socks as Georgia temperatures began dropping.

Farmers from several counties participated. Their efforts bridge the gap between rural producers and city residents who benefit from what they grow.

The Georgia Cotton Commission coordinated the sock drive. This group assists cotton producers statewide.

Winter creates serious risks for those living outside. Simple items like socks can prevent frostbite and other cold-related illnesses.
