He walked across the stage on Monday at the university's December graduation. The ex-Gamecocks defensive back finished his coursework through the Degree Completion Program and Palmetto College. The 13-year NFL veteran had been chipping away at classes for years.
"It was very important to me to go back and have my kids see me graduate," said Gilmore, according to Gamecocks Online. "I left school early (for the NFL), and I always wanted to go back. I've been working on it the last couple of years. I was able to do it all online."
The father of three had been tackling coursework after leaving campus to enter the NFL. Three seasons at South Carolina from 2009 to 2011 came before his pro career launched.
Gilmore snagged First Team All-SEC and Third Team All-American honors in 2010. His defense brought the Gamecocks to their first SEC Championship game that year. He contributed to the school's first 11-win season in 2011.
"Playing in the SEC Championship is one of my best memories," said Gilmore. "We also beat Clemson every year I was there. That's a big one."
The Degree Completion Program allows student-athletes who left in good academic standing to return and finish their studies. Participants take online courses or return to campus while receiving funding for room, board, books, and tuition. Access to tutors, laptops, and the Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center comes with enrollment.
"I was drafted early and had a chance to live out my dream and play in the NFL, so it was great to have a way to come back and get my degree," said Gilmore. "It takes some pressure off you."
Getting back into coursework after more than a decade was tough, but the cornerback said his grit helped him push through and succeed.
"I was successful in my football career, but I am happy that I was also successful in the classroom and able to get that degree," said Gilmore. "That's something no one can take from you."
He lives in Boca Raton, Florida, with his wife, Gabrielle, and their three children.
