Georgia State Park in Clay Co. Unveils Renovations Ahead of 2026 Reopening

George T. Bagby State Park just completed a major renovation. The project brought in a visitor center, 10 cottages, a 32-site campground, and recreation spots. Doors open to guests in early 2026.

Workers turned the old lodge into a visitor center. Inside, there's a conference room, classroom, retail space, and offices. Lake views greet guests as they check in at the retail counter for campsites or cottages.

The campground has full hookups, perfect for RVs. A camper amenity area boasts a renovated pool, tennis court, pickleball court, and basketball court. New features include a comfort station with laundry, a picnic shelter, and an amphitheater built for outdoor programs.

More than a mile of lighted walking paths now wind through the grounds, connecting the campground and cottages along the lakeshore and wetlands.

"These improvements make Bagby a full-service state park in the lower Chattahoochee Valley, open to future generations of anglers, birders, golfers, and campers," said DNR Deputy Commissioner Thomas Barnard during his keynote address, according to Augusta CEO.

The park honors George Bagby. He served as State Parks Director under Governor Jimmy Carter and later worked as Deputy Commissioner at the Department of Natural Resources under Commissioner Joe Tanner.

The 45,000-acre lake pulls in trophy fishing fans from across the region. A boat ramp and swimming beach give direct access to the water.

Wildlife, like alligators, deer, beaver, armadillo, river otter, gopher tortoises, eagles, osprey, and songbirds, call the park home. Visitors can bike the Phenomenon Trail out to the Walter F. George Dam or watch birds along the trails that crisscross the wetlands.

The Meadow Links Golf Course stays open year-round at affordable rates.
